At vox.io, we like to tear things apart and put them back together in a new and innovative way. As kids, we always played with Legos and built spaceships, sailboats, racing cars and impenetrable fortresses. If you can remember, there were always some unique features built in - parachutes, self-trimming sails, electric motors, or new edge catapults.
As grownups, we keep on building and innovating. One of the first innovations vox.io is bringing is the Quick Call, a reincarnation of something you used to know as collect calls. If you can remember (it’s been awhile, hasn’t it?), the main idea behind collect calls is that the recipient of the call pays for it. We thought it might be a great idea to offer you that possibility.
- Generate a Quick Call link
- Share it with anyone
- Receive a call when they click the link
Let us elaborate. Since vox.io runs in your browser and does not require additional software installation, all you have to do is create a Quick Call link and share that link with the person you want to talk to. We can send Quick Call links via IM, IRC, e-mail, Twitter DMs, Facebook messages, and even calendar invites. Sound easy? That’s because it is.
All the recipient of the link has to do to call you back is open the link and click on the Start Quick Call button. vox.io will then ring your web browser if you are online. If you are not logged into vox.io from the web, the call will be directed to your phone instead—just like a regular phone call.
To make it even easier, we added an Invite to Quick Call action to every contact in your address book that has an e-mail address listed. You can now send nice Quick Call invites straight from your contact list.
But what is really beautiful about Quick Calls is that they are not intrusive - the person you want to talk to will be able to call you back whenever it is convenient for him or her. Think of it as another way to say ”Call me when you can” message, but with a disposable phone attached to it. How much easier can it get?
To top it off, Quick Calls expire after one successful call, making them a great tool for you to get in touch with those you don’t want to share your phone number with, but would still like to talk to.
UPDATE: we have done some bigger changes to Quick Call links recently—they are now generated with vox.me URLs. Read more about it.
